You are, like so many others confusing sex and gender
Although these terms are often used interchangeably because of how often sex and gender match, they are not in fact the same thing.
Sex refers to biological characteristics. Gender refers to personality and behaviors.
Even when you’re talking about biological sex, however, the simplistic “XX/XY” version of chromosomal sex you were taught in 5th-grade biology was purposely simplified for your 5th-grade brain. If you never got beyond 5th-grade biology, you never learned that Sex at a genetic level is nowhere NEAR as simple as the “2 sex” memes transphobes love so much.
Yeah, Marjorie, thank you. We do trust the science. Unfortunately for the money you spent on that sign, it says nothing of the sort.
Right off the bat, the the “XX/XY” idea addresses “male” and “female” while failing to address even the most common intersex variations we see traits of which in about 1.7% of the population
But even just looking at the common intersex variations fails miserably to describe the complexity of chromosonal sex. A true view looks more like this:
Now again, this has nothing to do with what transphobes usually bring this argument around about, which is an attempt to deny who transgender people are at their core because of what they learned in 5th grade – that has to do with gender, not sex. It has to do with your personality, not your biology.
It’s a good idea to just try to understand people before flat out denying them their reality.
The fact of the matter is, if you’ve been sharing “2 Genders” memes on Social media, nothing I, Scientific American, Stanford University, The American Psychological Association, The American Medical Assocaition, or The American Academy of Pediatrics is going to say that is going to be more convincing to you than that dank meme your buddy shared on Telegram the other day.
But it’s still a good idea to read what they have to say on the subject.
One last thing. Any time I write about this subject and talk about what the Medical and Phsycologocial experts have to say on the matter, I get a bunch of comments from people who just don’t want to bother to take the time to actually read it parroting their favorite right-wing pundit’s talking points about how the scientists have ‘changed their opinion to match the political climate.”
Stop it. Enough. Scientists don’t change their opinion to match politics. Yes. Their opinion changes over time. That’s what scientists do when they study and their observations don’t match what they previously believed. They accept the new information and build it into their base of knowledge and update their conclusions.
You might want to take a page from that book.
